I have the following configuration: 2-Hard Drives, 1-CD, 1-CDR
Each HD is a master while the two CDs are slaves
HD1 has 5 partitions: (HD1=C: E: F: G: H:) (HD2=D:)
BIOS "sees" them all upon startup.
Problem: Windows tries to start but freezes when all four devices are installed.
If I remove the Master Slave device it boots OK.
Windows will boot to safe mode with all installed.
Tried to assign letters to the two CDs (J,K) but only one takes the assigned letter.
The other CD wants to take on letter H: (part of HD1 partition).
I can swap devices to my hearts content and all work properly until I make one the Primary Slave.
All jumpers are configured correctly (ie: Slave vs Master)
Anyone have an idea as to whats going on?

Some HD's have a jumper setting for "Master with slave attached", which is different than "Master".
What kind of drives do you have? Cheers,
Jim

Both are Maxtor HD. Only 3 jumper choices, SL, MA, CA.

If it starts in safe mode is that an indication that it may be a driver problem? Maybe you should boot and do a step by step through your Autoexec. You may see where the problem is if it is a driver problem.

Hi,

This is what I would try:

On First IDE channel:

HD1 as Master
HD2 as Slave --> You should NOT have an Active partition on this drive.

On Second IDE channel:

Your 2 CD-Roms as Master & Slave

You should show HD1 with partitions C,D,E,F,and G
HD2 with partition H

CD-roms as I and J.

Remember, I said should :>

Also, NEVER mix HD's and CD-roms on the same IDE channel.

Hope this helps

Ed

Eguy has a point. You should never have a Hard Drive and CDROM on the same IDE channel. Put both HDD on IDE1 and CDROMS on IDE2. You will get better performance from this. James Collins
