I have a few clients which have Windows 98 computers with the following problem:

If you open a folder, or use Window's explorer to browse to any folder, then delete a file or multiple files from that folder, the system will be unresponsive and seem to have locked up. However, if you wait for a 60 to 120 seconds then the system will function normally again. This delay also occurs when emptying the recycle bin. For all other computer operations, no delays or slow response are observed.

I have already run the usual tests for virii, adware, spyware, LBA access settings for the hard drive, complete hard drive and memory diagnostics, all Windows Updates, and isolation of all observable background software, but have not been able to isolate the source of this problem.

Can anyone help me with this?

My memory is not as good as it should be, and neither is my memory.

If you have updated the AV program, have run several different AV programs(one program may not remove all viruses, several online programs are available- ), have run the latest versions of Ad-aware, CWShredder, Spybot, and Hijack This, have just System Tray, ScanRegistry, and a firewall(if applicable) running in msconfig, and have DMA enabled for the HD's in Device Manager, then you may have to reformat and reinstall Windows.

Also, does the system slow down when performing tasks other than deleting files?

I've already done all that you suggest, ski, and the system does not slow down during any task other than just deleting files.

Set up 'Processor Usage(%)' in System Monitor, leave SM open, and see what happens to PU when you delete a file.

I've seen this frequently on 98, I'm convinced it has something to do with the latest IE6 on 98, I never saw this problem when IE5 was the browser. I usually see this when deleting large folders. If you don't wait, and you end task on it, explorer restarts, and the behavior will persist until you reboot. Its a very random problem.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Hmmm.....
I use Windows 98 with IE 6, and have never had any problems deleting files and folders, large or small.

I wonder if running the IE repair tool will help.

it may also be the instal av software. i had this problem some time ago with an older version ov norton av. i uninstalled it and installed different av software. problems gone. this may not be your issue but i thought i'd share it with you.

hope this helps. peace! [peace]

Also don't forget the standard delete Temp files, empty IE Cache and defrag the drive.

Large numbers of files can cause major delay in updating the FAT.

I have a question, does this happen in safe mode?
