I've windows 98 and when the computer is switch on but I'm doing nothing after a few minutes I see a lot of activity in the disk (the light is always flashing).

When I do a Scan Disk - it has to restart several times because something is always writing in the disk.

what can I do to prevent this from happening?

J.C.

Just taking a few guesses, but if the activity eventually stops, it might be that your swap file is resizing itself for what is needed. Most likely making itself smaller since there is not a need for a large swap file at that point in time. If you'd like to eliminate this possible cause, Go to system properities/performance/virtual memory, and select 'let me specify my own virtual memory settings'and make the min and max the same value, (usually 1 1/2 times the amount of RaM installed). If you have 128 megs of RAM, set both to 192-200. It will warn you that your computer may not operate correctly...etc. but click OK for that. If it doesn't change, you can keep it here or put it back to letting Windows handle your virtual memory.

Or if you're online it can be cookie activity taking place from the site you're visiting

Or it might be your operating system refreshing the desktop

Thanks for the replies

“Is your Office program set to do AutoSave every 10 minutes, say..?”

The computer starts writing on the disk without any program open.

I will try Fenix suggestion. See you soon.

but I'm doing nothing
doesn't mean there are no tasks and services running....just CTRL+ALT+DEL to see em all!!!!!
If you have, say, findfast(an Office prog)running or at startup it may be re-organizing it's index.dat file.

Hows about TaskScheduler....you got any tasks scheduled.....
hmmm?
Screen Saver settings....?
Power management Settings....?(This will always mess up defrag)
Or you've got a bot/or worse yet a virus trying to reach out to the web to dial/update...such as Realsched.exe

Who knows what the heck you got runnin on that t'ing....
unless you say what junk you've got installed....

When I do CTRL+ALT+DEL I have the following tasks and services running:

Explorer
Ctfmon
Kboot
Ledtray
Navapw32
Stimon
Rundll
Iconfig
Toshibon
Systray
Irmon
Mda
Nprotect
Rnapp

In the Ad-Remove programs I have between others the following:

HP DLA
LANDock Driver 1.00
Norton System Works 2002
Sentinel System Driver
System file update
XTND Connect PC

Could it be from one of them?

J.C.

Explorer OK
Ctfmon
Ctfmon.exe is the file that is responsible for controlling the Alternative User Input technologies. It starts the Language Bar component (in the Systray) and remains running in the background even after you quit an Office XP program. It also starts each time Windows is started and remains in the background, regardless of whether an Office XP program is started.
Ctfmon.exe is designed to continue to run in the background during Windows sessions after the Office XP Alternative User Input components are installed.
Kboot
One of the purposes of the BootImage is to act as a backup image in case the system fails to load up any of the specified (by default or via the configuration) IOS images. The backup image could then download a new IOS image to any of the PCMCIA slots. The other purpose of the BootImage is to help boot the system directly from a network server. For these reasons, the BootImage is developed with support for just the IP protocol and a few core IP features. This helps maintain a small and stable image that indirectly also helps in the bootup time
Ledtray OK
Navapw32
Norton AV
Stimon
Still Image Monitor (Stimon.exe) is a tool that is installed by Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and Windows 98 when a Universal Serial Bus (USB) scanning device is successfully enumerated. Stimon.exe is configured to start automatically during the Windows startup process,
Stimon.exe enables a USB still-image device (such as a scanner) to initiate data transfer to a program. This is called "push model" behavior. For example, if your scanning device has a Scan button, it may start a program and begin scanning when you press it.
Stimon contains two modules: Event Monitor and Control Center
Rundll OK
Iconfig
Looks like SMC java
Toshibon???
Systray OK
Irmon Infrared Monitor
Some info:
Mda
MS Access
Nprotect OK
Rnapp OK

as far as "System File Update"
When you run Setup for Office XP, Setup.exe looks for certain files on your computer. Based on that search, the System Files Update installer may be started.

The files that are installed by the System Files Update are part of, but not limited to, the following Windows components:
-Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), version 2.5
-Fonts
-Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 5.01
-Help
-National Language Support (NLS) files
-Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) files

You're going to have to decide what's worth keeping..
Hope this helps[bigsmile]
I knew MS Office programs had something to do with this nonsense

As far as
XTND Connect PC
taken from In this installation I was asked to check the boxes next to whatever translator I wanted to install. This product supports a lot of different "translators" for syncing to various products. I checked off "Pocket PC" devices and "ACT 2000" for my test. After installation, the computer required rebooting to finish the installation. I got a BSOD (the computer crashed), but that could be
more the fault of my computer. After reboot ActiveSync synced again and then I had to manually start XTND Connect PC. It then installed a version of itself on the Pocket PC. Next, it loaded field info from ACT!, checked the sync status, and started reading ACT! contacts. I
was then informed that it was a "first time sync" and then the program asked me if I wanted to replace the Pocket PC data, replace the PC data, or combine. I chose to "combine." Next it loaded information
from "ACT meeting" and then from "Pocket PC Agenda." Then it hung at record 51 while reading "ACT meeting." That was enough for me.

also
IMO...you've got more synchronization stuff runnin' on there than an Atomic Clock [bigsmile]
Just to re-iterate.....you said
The computer starts writing on the disk without any program open
and I'm sure you've seen this;
It also starts each time Windows is started and remains in the background, regardless of whether an Office XP program is started. Ctfmon.exe is designed to continue to run in the background during Windows sessions after the Office XP Alternative User Input components are installed...

You see...things are not what they "seem" to be..at all!
