Is there a URL that lists and explains the error messages that appear when something goes wrong?

This is not the answer you're looking for because it is an after the fact solution, but my suggestion would be:

I just did a search on "windows 95 error messages" (w/o quotes) and scanned through the first couple of pages. This and other searching I've done lead me to think the most common situation for urls is to focus on particular issues. Someone has had a problem and painfully and laboriously figured out the answer and posted it for reference, or someone gets really interested in a particular type of hardware or software problem and gathers up all kinds of info in a web site.
So when you get an error message if you type its number and or text into google; many, many times you will get answers/solutions to the problems.

If you're looking for a learning process, I would suggest
a) look at your manuals for your current software/hardware to start gaining understanding of your own current system and how it is supposed to work.

b) look through the faqs for win95/98. You will see here issues that either enough people have raised or some forum participant thinks is important enough to have a permanent on-file reference.

c) read through the last 2-3 months posts in win95/98.

d) follow current postings in win95/98, general hardware, and general virus (this is a starting point-review the forum lists and pick things that are of personal interest to you.)

e) take a problem that somebody posts and you think looks simple and experiment with google and try to find an answer and then compare what you find with what tek-tips respondents post. Sometimes you'll find it wasnt simple after all-and the why increases your knowledge. Comparing the answers lets you see what you did well and what you left out.

I think that over a period of time this will increase your understanding and improve your confidence and ability to find solutions to a specific problem with which you are faced.
