I just went to a W7 desktop at work. Known good responding mapped network drives scripted are acting up. On my old XP machine all drives respond as expected. On the W7 machine the mapped network drives that are pointing to Windows 2003 Server are rediculously slow in cataloging. The paths to Windows 2008 mappings are responding quick like expected.

What is the tweak I need? On wht side? Server or Workstation?

I have 45 machines to deploy and I am NOT going to until I resolve this mapping responce issue.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Just to hit you back quickly, is the mapped drive being indexed by the workstation? In the folder view options is "Use Sharing Wizard" checked?

"Silence is golden, duct tape is silver...

The mappings are scripted by your credentials on any workstation you log into, it appears the workstation is trying to Index... not sure.

the Use Sharing Wizard is checked.

script reads simply

net use [driveletter]: \\[servername]\[path]
6 or 7 drive mappings....

Thanks... standing by

Found this:
"Problem: Is because it is trying to search and cache the location of files on the mapped drives.

Solution: Turn off windows search. Go to control panel > Select Program and Features> Click on Turn Windows features on or off> Uncheck Remote Differential Compression and Windows Search, Click OK and restart computer."

Easy attempt to see if it helps

"Silence is golden, duct tape is silver...

So far I have tried the following:

Disable windows search
Disable remote differential compression
Enabled Jumbo Packets
Disabled IPv6
Downloaded new NIC driver

Result: Zero success

You didn't say if you Unchecked the Sharing Wizard - that sounds like a possible culprit...

on the Windows 7 side, attempt the following...

Turn off AutoTuning:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled

turn of RSS:

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

also turn off RDC (Remote Differential Compression):

Type in appwiz.cpl in the Windows Start menu search box and hit enter.
In the Programs and features window, open Turn Windows features on or off to proceed to Windows Features page where the feature to be removed.
Scroll down and uncheck the box named Remote Differential Compression and click OK.

Thanks for all your input.... it led me to find that we needed this.

For the complete fix perform:

This fixes Windows 7 explorer slow on mapped drives to server 2003.

At a command prompt run these 2 commands:

netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Now Reboot

Here is the explaination of the settings:

Tested on 3 different machines and proven

YES! If you've not run into this issue, you have no idea how much of a life saver those 2 lines can be!!!

I had all sorts of issues with Explorer and really anything that connected to anything over the network, which working in the office environment where I am, that's practically EVERYTHING.

The IT dept finally solved the issues with those 2 commands in the command prompt.

Might I suggest that someone put something together about this in a Windows 7 FAQ, or else append it to an existing FAQ? I'd volunteer, but I'm already short on time as it is.
