I just reinstalled a customers PC with windows Ultimate. After setting up her network, all her database, programs etc... We found that windows won't boot unless the Windows dvd is in the cd rom drive!

It just gives the Hard disc failure error at post!

It must be getting some kind of boot info from the disc, but I don't know what it is. I have changed the bios settings, tried repair...

Nothing changes the issue. Any light that could be shed, would be appreciated, thx.

When you mention "repair" I take it to mean "Startup Repair", is that correct?

Vista and Windows 7 uses a hidden system file called Bootmgr, and a hidden folder called Boot, to successfully boot. Are these files were on the hard drive. I would have expected the Startup Repair tool to have fixed that problem for you.

Have you tried the FixMbr equivalent command?

How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows Vista

Vista's Startup Repair.

Have you check to see if the harddrive is good...had a hard drive come in with that problem...the bootsector was damaged via bad sectors and the computer would not boot without a disk...
something to look at

also ...any USB drives on this computer...sometimes the USB causes miss assignment the install process
