Windows 2000 - Windows File Protection error message

I get a "Windows File Protection" error message, that
reads: Files that are required for Windows to run
properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To
maintain system stability, Windows must restore the
orignial versions of these files. Insert your Windows 2000
Professional CD-ROM now.

So I insert my Windows 2000 CD into the CD drive, and the
error disappears... only to reappear 2-3 minutes later,
I've even reinstalled Windows 2000 and performed a repair
from my Windows 2000 CD. Still does not make this message
go away. I even tried sfc /scannow, but no luck. Someone
please help.

The drive is NTFS?

Try first removing the READ ONLY from the C drive and apply to all folders and subfolders.

Then, using the local system administrator account, set the entire C drive to EVERYONE - FULL CONTROL. Make sure that no other usernames or groups are listed when you set this option.

I'm not saying this will fix the problem, but sometimes when you run into file problems or strange error messages, this can fix things.

Example, if Lotus Notes directory is set to READ ONLY or the permissions have been set too high and you try to run the program, it will say that you cannot run the Administrative program or something and need to reinstall the program. This is bogus error message but the program just reports what it thinks is wrong.

I have the same trouble appearing on 5 stations all starting today. Nothing has been installed recently and the problem appeared when another person logged on, it started asking for the 2K cd right away.
I changed the permissions by adding the everyone group and allowing full control and the problem went away on every system I did it to. After a reboot I decided I would try to remove the everyone group so the systems were back the way they were before and see if the SFC problem came back again. When I looked in the security on C: the Everyone group was not there, it disappeared during the reboot and the problem did not come back. So i guess I'll leave the problem as resolved although I don't know why the Everyone group is gone. Is there a default setting that that group has no permissions on the C: drive?

No there is no default policy that I know of that removes the Everyone group.

It sounds like you may have removed the security somehow (using SFC perhaps or going back to an old configuration?) Not sure why it dissappeared.

I would say just keep an eye on things and remember, use NTFS permissions sparingly and only lock down data folders/files. And never put data inside of an Applications Installed Directory. If you ever have to reinstall that application, you should never have to worry that there might be data located in that folder. Of course users will be users, but you get the idea.

If error messages still continue to plague you, there might be something else wrong. Oh, before I forget, you can also lock yourself out if you DENY access to a parent folder, but grants access to the child folder.

C: - EVERYONE = DENY
\FOLDER - EVERYONE = FULL CONTROL

Effective Permission - EVERYONE DENY to the ENTIRE computer. How to fix? Reinstall to a new directory...
