Windows 2000 Terminal Services Licensing Service Question

Hello everyone - I am looking to deploy a new Windows 2000 Terminal Server in an existing Windows 2000 domain (which is not using Active Directory). Much of the literature I have read to this point indicates that the Licensing Service needs to be installed on a domain controller in a Windows 2000 domain. Would this still be the case if the Windows 2000 domain does not use AD?

All of my TS clients (at least initially) will be Windows 2000 Professional machines. Since they come with a Terminal Services CAL, do they even need to hit the Terminal Services Licensing service?

You will need to buy Terminal Server Licenses for Windows 2000. When you install the server, you will get an option to install licenses. You must have a license pack or the license agreement papers with the information needed to unlock the Terminal Server Licences. It has to be validated by Microsoft before it is activated (they will send you back an activation code after you've inputed your key and sent it to M$).

Windows XP Professional now include the CAL for Terminal Services, but not the Windows 2000 Pro (unless this has recently changed).

If you can find out how the Windows 2003 Server licensing will work, maybe you might want to wait...

The TS server can have licensing server installed if you do not have a domain, but it may become complicated later if you do upgrade.

The official advice from M$ is that you should "consider" installing the TS licensing server on a computer that is capable of becoming a W2k domain controller.

You are right the W2kPro does include a W2k TS Server cal, so you can count these as already bought when you add licenses to your server. However, be aware that the shiny new W2k3 Server required a new cal from any client. Some enterprise agreements allow for the cal on W2k3 Server until the next renegotiation.

So for customers this is bad M$ is getting really greedy.
