Hello everyone -

I have installed Win 2000 Pro several dozen times now, but now I have to install 2000 Server for the first time - experience with Linux yes, with NT no.

Question: Is there anything special I have to regard or do I just install the whole thing like 2000 Pro?

Does anyone know a nice Windows 2000 Server HowTo Site, including an installation HowTo?

Please do also reply to my email: makeschin@gmx.net

Thanks,
Lorenz

Installing most servers these days is about as difficult as making coffee.

For most things it is just like installing Pro - just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Ensure the BIOS is flashed to the latest version and check the HCL. Once up and running apply SP2 straight away.

Just a recommendation: After you install the server, you should get the 'Configure your server' dialog box when you log in. If you're going to make the server a Domain Controller, I recommend you run DCPROMO from the Run... box. I've encountered oddball problems with 'Configure your server' from time-to-time and would clear the check box on it so it doesn't show up again.

Plan your partitions well if you are not planning on using NTFS as the file system. Windows 2000 is going to want to have your system partition formatted as NTFS to install Active Directory. It's going to suggest you save the sysvol and something else (I forget at the moment) on separate partitions/drives and you would probably want those to be NTFS also. Also, just to reitterate Zelandakh's comment to apply Service Pack 2 immediately to protect against Code Red and similar viruses taking advantage of a security whole.

Aloha,

James
