I am helping a business in a remote area with only dial up available. They have a Windows 2000 Server (DC) with a basic internal modem. They had a dial up connection which was functioning, but the ISP went out of business. They have signed up with a new ISP. The server will connect with the ISP via the dial up connection we have set up. The network all connects fine, but I am unable to ping anything externally. (IP or name -yahoo.com-) Needless to say, I cannot browse either. The modem is getting an IP and everything accurately from the ISP (DNS, gateway, IP address), but it seems that the server is not routing traffic through to the modem for external, Internet addresses. I have attempted to put in forwarders for DNS, removing them, etc. with no luck. At first I thought it was DNS, but I can't ping anything, even by IP address. It seems as if there is a traffic routing issue that I cannot find. This system appears to have been set up on Internet Connection Sharing previously, but I have that turned off. (I also attempted to turn this back on as well) I get the feeling the External traffic is being routed through the NIC and not the modem...... Thank you in advance for any help. It is a basic 2000 Server Domain Controller with 5 PCs connecting, no router, no extra security software, etc. Very basic set up. The new ISP connection works fine if we plug a laptop with a modem into the existing phone line, eliminating an ISP problem.
