We have a workstation with Windows 2000 Professional (SP4) installed which has almost 75% of the CPU resources being used by a file named 'expfax.exe'.

This file resides in the folder 'C:\WINNT\AppPatch'.

We have no idea what this file and it's folder are about or how to free up the CPU resources being used by this file.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

If you kill the process does it come back after a few seconds?

To kill it go into your taskmanager and then click on end process.

If it comes back it could be spy/mal ware and you could try running some removal tools like Spybot and Adaware.

Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as it happens.

I think Jump1ng hit the nail on the head, Spyware can really chew up CPU power, mostly when it can’t get past your fire wall. It will continually pound the ports looking for a way out, and in turn, will keep your firewall program busy, sucking more power from the CPU.

Computers are like a bag of hammers, they won't do a damn thing until you pick it up and SMASH something with it!!

That program sounds familiar to me. I think it might be a program called efax and it was a seriour resource hog. Even after uninstalling it would still show up in Task Manager. I had to go into msconfig and stop it at startup. See if you can find it in yours.
