One of my users was traveling when out of the blue, his ThinkPad renamed itself. I name each laptop based on user, and this one had been someone else's a couple of years ago. Everything was fine the first couple of weeks, and then one day he turned it on and the laptop name had changed back to that of the woman who had used it before. The big problem was that the user could not logon to the newly named laptop.

I have the laptop back and can't find anything wrong. I can see when the laptop name changed in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing else there to provide any leads. I can just rename it and solve the problem, but I want to find out what caused this so I can prevent it from happening again. Any ideas?

I have never seen a computer rename itself without user invervention, unless it was recently reimaged?
