windows 2000 registry 1

My computer does not detect my cd-rw drive. It was working fine last week and when I turned it on this morning it does not detect the drive. I have checked all connection, it is getting power. I used the troubleshooter in windows and it sugested the registry might be corupt any suggesting? How do you fix the registry, I a few programs on here I can not lose. I don't have the disk to reinstall them.

Does it show up in Device Manager with a yellow exclamation mark against it?
