Windows 2000 Pro - cannot access network all of a sudden

I was able to login to the network using a new addition to the network - a Win2k dekstop. However I had not yet set the computer to join the domain, I had it set to join the workgroup (accidentally typed the domain name in the workgroup section, doh!) Anyway, that was a not an issue as I was still able to map drives and authenticate. All of a sudden I could not access the network. When I reboot, the drives would not map. So I decided to try to join the domain and it returns a DNS error. "problem validating the domain, this could be caused by a DNS lookup problem. The domain does not exist or cannot be contacted." or something similiar to that effect. Now:

- all other computers on my network are fine
- I can ping 127.1.1.0
- I can ping the server ip
- I can ping the router
- I can release and renew a ip from DHCP successfully
- I can get internet access through our network, just like anyone else
- at one point, without joining the domain I was able to map drives, use network resources
- I performed a ipconfig /dnsflush and /registerdns

This is the ONLY WARNING in Event viewer on my computer:

Event ID 8021
Source - Browser
The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master \\LUCKYNT2000 on the network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{046340A6-7FEC-4302-B0DB-4F18D738449D}. The data is the error code.

***** I noticed this error on the server:

The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer DANIEL that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{CD8D7F09-F8C0-453C-8E. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

That is my computer.

Any help appreciated!

Daniel

Try stopping and disabling the "computer browser" on your system, and reboot. You may also want to restart the computer browser service on the server, just to be sure.

Try rejoining the domain.

Start -> settings -> control panel -> Administrative tools -> services.

That's where to find the serives snapin BTW

Hello and thanks.

Even if I rebooted both server and my system several times?

Still have not seen anything like this, its such an enigma. Are we all stumped?

p.s Karmic: I cant rejoin the domain, I cant even JOIN the domain to start.

Daniel

Ok, when you run IPCONFIG /ALL from the workstation, what is the result?

That's a good place to start.
What DNS server(s) are listed.
What's the hostname?
What's the DNS suffix?
What's the DHCP server?

~ K.I.S.S - Don't make it any more complex than it has to be ~

The result is almost identical to a functional workstation next to me. With the exception of PRIMARY DNS SUFFIX, which is blank.

I even changed out the NIC.

What DNS server(s) are listed? 66.51.205.100 and 66.51.206.100
What's the hostname? Daniel
What's the DNS suffix? None
What's the DHCP server? 192.168.1.1 (same as router ip)

I have also noticed this on my domain. Are you running W2K Server SP4???
There is possibly a DHCP registration problem. I have not resolved this issue fully on my side but this is the path I am following. There is by default a 21 day lease on dhcp addresses , set this to unlimited. Also there is a check box to allow automaticly update DHCP client information in DNS and always update DNS. These can be found under Admin tools - DHCP - right click on scope and go to properties, look on the DNS tab.
When you have done this reboot the server.
My reboot of the server is happening this evening, so this is merely a suggestion .

As a work around I found that removing a PC from the domain to a work group and renaming it before adding it back to the domain will sort out an individual PC.

Server is: Win2k Server correct!

I do not see DHCP in admin tools..

please advise!

Daniel

I am installing SP4 right now, can you get back to me on the DHCP suggestion?

on your W2K server go to Administrative Tools, DHCP should be there, then follow the above.

MCP

MCP,

I already mentioned that it is not there. DHCP is not installed on the server. I think the linksys DSL router/switch is handling the ip addresses.

Any other suggestions?

Daniel

OK, strange occurance. I applied SP4 to the server and rebooted. Also rebooted my computer.

I attempted to join the domain and this time, that error ( did not occur, it let me join the domain. It asked me to reboot for changes to take place and I attempted to login to the domain. It said "cannot find domain luckystarusa"

Since this failed I logged backed in as local admin to my computer.

I have now have this error in my event viewer:

"No Windows NT or Windows 2000 Domain Controller is available for domain LUCKYSTARUSA. The following error occurred:
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. "

Also when I ipconfig /all the Primary DNS suffix now points to the correct luckystarusa.com

Any suggestions now?

Another error that I noticed since I posted last:

Attempt to update DNS Host Name of the computer object in Active Directory failed. The updated value was 'Daniel'. The following error occurred:
The security context could not be established due to a failure in the requested quality of service (e.g. mutual authentication or delegation).

and

Attempt to update HOST Service Principal Names (SPNs) of the computer object in Active Directory failed. The updated values were '<UNAVAILABLE>' and '<UNAVAILABLE>'. The following error occurred:
The security context could not be established due to a failure in the requested quality of service (e.g. mutual authentication or delegation).

Note: Those errors occured on my workstation, not the server

Two more errors on my workstation:

Event ID 11151 and 11160

The system failed to register network adapter with settings:

Adapter Name : {E74A3346-7D22-4B80-ACDA-264A65C7D0D7}
Host Name : Daniel
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : luckystarusa.com
DNS server list :
66.51.205.100, 66.51.206.100
Sent update to server : None
IP Address(es) :
192.168.1.58

The cause of this DNS registration failure was because of DNS server failure. This may be due to a zone transfer that has locked the DNS server for the applicable zone that your computer needs to register itself with.

(The applicable zone should typically correspond to the Adapter-specific Domain Suffix that was indicated above.) You can manually retry registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your network systems administrator to verify network conditions.

and

The system failed to register pointer (PTR) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
with settings:

Adapter Name : {E74A3346-7D22-4B80-ACDA-264A65C7D0D7}
Host Name : Daniel
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : luckystarusa.com
DNS server list :
66.51.205.100, 66.51.206.100
Sent update to server : None
IP Address : 192.168.1.58

The reason that the system could not register these RRs was because of a security related problem. The cause of this could be (a) your computer does not have permissions to register and update the specific DNS domain name set for this adapter, or (b) there might have been a problem negotiating valid credentials with the DNS server during the processing of the update request.

You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
