I have never seen this error before.

I did an upgrade for my parents from Win '98 to Win 2000. I backed up all of their old data, fdisked the hard drive, formated for NTFS, installed Win 2000, created their user accounts, no problem so far.

When installing applications the screen didn't look so hot. So I went to adjust the video settings. The display settings is set to only 640x480 and there is no way to change it.

I think no problem and go: /my computer/system properties/device manager/display adapters, but we show an error, it must be a driver.

They have a 8mg Nvidia video card, so I go out to their website and install the drivers under C:/winnt/system32 and then select it, but it still shows an error. I have an extra, older video card that is PCI, so I slap that one in an expansion slot and select the driver from the DB, and have the same error again.

Also, I notice that USB is not working as well, so I'm not sure if the AGP slot is damaged, or there is a problem with the motherboard, because both video cards work find under a different computer. I tried to use the onboard help to troubleshoot, but all I get it some sort of 'This device cannot start (code 10'), and to reinstall again.

Has anyone seen this problem before and can they offer any help as to why there is a problem with this?

thanks

-Chris

If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have
all the drivers installed. (Code 10)

Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.

Solution button: Update Driver

To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. Form example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated.
Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.

I had the same error . The solution was: check all your installed devices must be in MS HCL. If not Download a driver from the manufacturer and replace the old one. Driver MUST be designed for w2k!

One of my office computer stations has the same problem. It is MS HCL. I unplugged the device and rebooted the computer three times to clear the register. I then loaded new drivers and replaced the hardware. But this did not fix my problem. I can take the same hardware and place it in another computer and it works great. Go figure

Just for completeness:
I had the same error for my loudspeakers. Re-installing the drivers that were actually on the HD made them available again. I had the impression that the error was linked to either installing a MS security patch or a later version of Nero and restarting the system.
