My Windows 2000 server suddenly has buggered up - one day it was fine but the next day, it the network slowed to a snail pace. It wanted me to clear the logs as they were full but I tried restarting the server and it will no longers start up.

It reaches the stage where it says 'preparing network connections' and stays there indefinitely. I am able to start up in safe mode but not safe mode with networking.

I've tested the network hardware and it is fine.

Help!

Hi there

The computer did start but after a very, very long time on the establishing network connections.

It's running again but slowly. Checked for viruses, and found nothing. I don't know what the hold up is :-(

Alan first try rebooting again without your network connections (assuming this is not a domain controller)and try plugging it in after it reboots does it respond then. Check your event logs carefully and report any EventIDs. Check your connectivity

It's very slow. All the computers will access the server, but when trying to browse the files, it hangs indefinitely.

Just restarted a number of services and it seems to be working now.

Thanks for your reply!

Sounds like your network card is having some issues, or the drivers. Try updating the drivers for your NIC first to see if that helps. If not, consider trying a different NIC.

Good luck,

At the command prompt find out the output of the following:
dcdiag, and netdiag and check your events logs and see if there are some errors.
From there you can, if there is funds, replace the NIC and change the cable from the server to the switch.
