I have installed and setup 2 Windows 2000 servers. One of them is will be the Production box and the other a Development and Test Box.

I have designated the Production box as a Domain Controller and have created the domain name to be CF5SQL2000.edenpr.k12.mn.us

Now, I want to make the Development and Test Box just a server and I want this server box to join this domain. Somehow, I don't know how to configure it to see this domain using the domain wizard.

Any suggestion?

Or, if I can't then, I prefer to make these two boxes just servers with no active directory. But how do I go about it so that I can still be able to create and maintain user's account?

All help is appreciated. Thanks.

Are they both domain controllers? Are they in the same domain? same Forest? We need a little more info.

I'm new to this so I probably don't know much.

As of now, I have setup them up as two domains and domain controllers:

CF5SQL2000.edenpr.k12.mn.us (Production) and
CF5SQL2000D.edenpr.k12.mn.us (Development & Test)

No, they are not in the same domain. I don't have a domain Tree or Forest either. Do I need one of each inorder to create the domain(s) and configure the active directory?

What I want to be able to do is:

1. Delete the two existing domains:
CF5SQL2000.edenpr.k12.mn.us (Production) and
CF5SQL2000D.edenpr.k12.mn.us (Development & Test)

If deleting domain is possible and if it means to
destroy the active directory then let it be so..

2. Create only one domain with a short domain name.

3. Both box in the same domain but one of them as the
Primary domain controller.
4. Setup Active Directory.
5. Create Trusts between these two boxes.
6. Create user accounts.
7. Add computers to the domain.

I thought that it might not be so much different from Windows NT 4.0 but I am wrong.

Thanks for your help?

Your going to have to blow them away and do a fresh install of 2000. You might be able to demote your DEV server(run dcpromo) and then introduce back into your new domain(after it's built) but there is no way to do that for your root domain controller. Remember that in Win2k you have Domain Controllers, there isn't a PDC/BDC relationship.

My Advice:

Do a fresh install of the Production Box.
Install DNS and AD on it and make sure everything is OK.
Do a fresh install of the Dev Box.
Introduce it into the new domain.

Just ask if you have any questions. :)

If neither one is set as an active directory domain controller you should be able to back them out to workgroup.
Then change the names and promo the first.
If the second one is to be new domain in new tree in existing forest then there are special steps to take.
If just going to be additional DC in an existing forest then promo the second after changing name.Same if it is going to be a child domain.
If new domain/&tree same forest let us know and will try to document steps.

HI!

If you don't need Active Directory, it is recommended not to install it.
You can maintain local users and group accounts on a stand-alone server using Computer Management.

You can uninstall AD from each server using DCPROMO.

If you need AD, and you want the Dev server to join the production one, follow this:
1) Run DCPROMO on Dev to uninstall current domain.
2) Configure Dev to use Production as DNS server.
3) Check TCP/IP connectivity from Dev to Production and name resolution:
PING x.x.x.x (IP of production)
PING domain-name (of production)
4) Join the domain by right-click and properties on My Computer.
