On my computer, operating under Windows 2000, there is only one account. By accident, the user type was changed from administrator to power user. Now, I can't access the administration menu from the control panel because I am not an administrator. However, there are no other users on the computer to access this account. Is there any way to circumnavigate this? Is there an administration account that I can access administrative options from?

Thanks.

There's usually a user called Administrator which cannot be deleted. You need to find out what the password is for this user and then login. This will allow you to grant admin rights back to your original user.

If you don't know the password try blank (no password) and admin which are common choices.

There is a utility that can be found on the web that allows you reset the Administrator password to a value of your choice that I had to resort to when a client switched to a new IT maintenance company and the old company wouldn't give them the admin password.

I can't remember its name at the moment but if you're interested reply to this post and I'll dig it out.

Neither of those passwords worked. I'm not even sure that the name of the default Administrator account is "Administrator" either. If you could dig out that utility, that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks.

The only one that I know of that will enable you to change an unknown password is Winternals ERD Commander. Unfortunately it isn't a freebie...

Thanks so much! All of your help was very useful, and I managed to reset my password on the administrator account, and the computer is running well.

Thanks.
