I have been asked by a friend to update their NT 4.0 domain. They currently have 1 NT 4.0 domain controller and 5 clients. They currently have a speedstream DSL modem set up by their ISP to give NAT addresses to all clients, including the server. The clients and server all receive dynamic addresses from the DSL modem and are assigned the ISP’s DNS servers IP address for internet name resolution. They need to upgrade to Windows 2000 server. I have purchased a new server and installed windows 2000 server with Active Directory. I have also purchased a CISCO 827H DSL router. I want to want to assign the internet connections 1 static IP address to a port on the router. Then, I want set up NAT on the router for internal internet access. My questions is, with the router set up to provide NAT, can the clients still point to the windows 2000 DNS sever and use forwarders and or root hints for internet name resolution. Do they need to point to the windows 2000 DNS server because active directory in installed? The server needs to have a static IP because DNS installed.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
