Ok here is the deal I have a new server with windows 2003 r2. on IP 192.168.1.2. I havea this server setup as a domain controller, DNS, and wins. All the machines I am setting up on this server are windows XP Pro machines and they have the DNS and wins pointed to 192.168.1.2 Any machine that is on the 192.168.1.0 network will show up in the network places. However, I have 8 other networks in different locations and when I have a machine on that IP it will not show up in the network places on the server ie: 192.168.8.51. You can ping them by computer name and IP address they just don't show up under network places on the server. However all the machines show up under the XP Pro machine on the client side even if its on a different IP range. Can anyone shed some light onto this for me.

NETBIOS packets are broadcast so by default they are blocked by routers. You would have to configure any routers to allow NETBIOS packets. However, this is not recommended.

I went into my VPN boxes and enable NETBIOS over VPN and it worked. I know you said that it is not recommended to do this. Why is this?
