Hi, I'm getting these errors messages "rundll.exe or msngr.exe" errors etc... each time I try to install hardware or software...it tends to freeze alot & need rebooting...what should I do? The PC runs on a Amd k6 cpu...I'm out of ideas other than reintalling the OS, only thing that keeps me from that is I can't backup, I'll wipe out some large program's thats hard to find.
Any help is appreciated.

Tony

A couple of things you might try.
System File Checker.
Go to start > Run > and type in: SFC
Choose to extract one file, and then extract rundll32 and whatever other files are giving errors.
If that fails, reinstall windows over top of itself.
Open Explorer, browse to c:\windows and rename win.com
Plug in the Windows CD, and run setup.
Do NOT restart the computer between steps.
Change the default install path to "Other", and then change it to c:\windows from c:\windows.000
That should fix up most problems.

Cheers,
Jim

It may also be caused by a virus. To check for it you would have to create a set of Def floppies and a boot floppy so u can boot before windows runs. Symantec's works pretty well but u will need as many as 20 floppies. You will also have to get build the virus defs on another machine. I have found that not being able to load most programs can be caused by a virus. Also, is your msconfig file missing? (Start, run, msconfig). If so, it is almost certainly virus related.

Good luck
