Everytime I boot I get a message that Explorer has caused an error in exploer.exe. won't boot in safe mode or regular, any suggestions? I really don't want to have to totally redo my whole system.

You can reload over the top as long as you have your key kode. Try reinstalling first without wiping out everything. If that does not work then you will more than likely have to kill it all and reinstall from scratch.

I AM under the assumption that you have tried your system at minimum configuration (video card only).

First, if this is not a brand new install, boot safe-mode to a DOS prompt. From here, run "SCANREG /RESTORE" and select a backup registry that was created prior to the date your problem appeared.
You can also step through boot-up until HIMEM.SYS loads, select "F5" for a prompt, and run "SCANREG /FIX" to repair your existing registry.
If you can get into WINDOWS, your best bet would be to upgrade you Internet Explorer. Win 98 had a Virtual Machine problem, causing different problems on different manufacturer's models. Dell was shipping an update with their systems. Installing 5.1 or 5.5 would do it also, making sure VM and Java are installed during upgrade.
IE is tied into everything, but not too well at that time. Good luck.
