1) I have the Windows User/Password Screen appearing at Bootup, on 3 systems, and cannot get rid of it. It is showing the name Win98 is registered to, on one system, and the ISP Username on the other 2. ( I do not use Windows Users or Passwords at all on any of the systems. ) Closing or Canceling kills the screen but it is back on every Reboot.
2) Also, on all 3 systems, the "Save Password" Option is greyed-out. I have deleted the DUN and recreated it/rebooted several times with no change. Internet Options screen will also not hold Password.
( There are no .PWL lists in any of the systems. New ISP info does show in Registry in all 3. ( I recently changed companies, and deleted all previous DUN info, everywhere, including the Registry, in all 3 systems. )
What is the best way to deal with these issues?

Well, to get rid of the password prompt:

1) Control Panel->Passwords
2) On the profiles tab, make sure "All Users share the same preferences..." is selected
3) Control Panel->Network
4) Make sure "Primary Network Logon" is "Windows Logon"
5) Edit the system.ini file -> make sure the section entitled [Password Lists] is empty
6) Do a search for all *.pwl files on the hard drive and delete all results

Shutdown and restart
You should be ok now...

NOPE, all is still the same. This one is a bona-fide mystery!
1) Passwords always has been set as "all users share the same preferences.."
2) Network Primary Logon always has been "Windows Family Logon"
3) System.ini, Passwords is empty.
4) There ARE no .PWL Lists ( haven't been any ).

Tried a workaround someone else suggested: changing Network Primary Logon from "Microsoft Family Logon" to "Windows Logon", hit OK and not reboot. Then, went to Control Panel/Passwords, ( where I was supposedly, to find a Tab for "Changing Password", and did not. I have ONLY the Tab for where "All Users Share the Same Preferences" is selected ( and it is selected ).
I also discovered that Win98SE ( which is what is on this system, the others have Win98 ), adds an "AutoLogon" Key to the Registry ( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_Software_Windows_Network_Real Net Mode ). This Defaults to "0", and can be edited to "01" in order to kill the Logon Screen.
Guess what?? I have NO KEY for this "AutoLogon". I have the following instead ( interesting ):

ab Default ( value not set )
011,110 LoadRMDrive 00 00 00 00
ab netcard ''''
ab preferredredir ''''

ALSO:
KKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_Network_Logon
has the following:

ab Default ( value not set )
011,110 LMLogon 00 00 00 00
ab Primary Provider "Microsoft Family Logon"
ab Username ( shows my ISP Username here )
ab transport ''''

I'm so confused, I'm starting over:

Go to C:\Windows
Delete all .pwl files

Open system.ini
Delete all lines under
[Password Lists]

Go to ControlPanel>Network
Choose Windows Logon as Primary Login

Reboot

You should now get the login box.

Not Yet?
Try
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon
Delete the MustBeValidated value if it exists.
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\current version\network\real mode net

Right-click on Real Mode Net key, choose new BinaryValue, name it AutoLogon, right-click on it, choose modify type in 01 00 00 00.

Now right-click on InternetExplorer on the desktop, choose properties, click the Connections tab, highlight your dial-up connection and choose the Settings button. Input your dial-up password here.

Or try this information from Microsoft. In Internet Explorer, choose Help>Online Support, click the Searchable Knowledge Base, choose Specify an artice ID number and enter the following numbers:

Dial-Up Networking Password Is Not Saved: Q148925
Save Password Check Box Is Unavailable: Q137361

If all else fails, try re-creating the Dial-Up Networking connection.
