Win98 to XP Pro upgrade PC won't shut down!

I treated my second PC (Compaq Deskpro) to an upgrade from Win 98 to XP Pro and all has gone well with all updates/service packs etc and looking just like my main machine.

Problem is that it won't shut down! When I select 'shut down' it goes through the motions and then states 'it's now safe to switch off etc' and pressing the power button does nothing.

The only way to shut it down is to hold in the power button for approx 10 secs which forces a shut down or unplug it - neither of which is pleasing!

Any ideas?
