I got a retail XP Pro Upgrade and removed some known conflicting software apps and drivers.

After one of the first reboots and gets back into the Upgrade process, the HardDrive and CD become Lost. I Even tried to put the HD in a different computer to get past this if it was a Hardware issue with the computer, but it still has the same issue.

I am about to install as a new OS but would rather not have to reinstall all the apps again.

Any suggestions as what files could be looked at or modified to get past the problem.

Thanks

thanks for the link.

All I can say is that there was a BIOS antivirus on during the first upgrade process, but at the notification I allowed the change. The BOIS AV was turned off after this issues, but still no luck.

I didn't remove or disable the Norton AV. Not sure if this is a major issue. Is there a way to edit a file and remove a few things out of the startup by connecting the Drive to a working computer. I don't think it is hardware at this point.

Its a 1 1/2 old ASUS P4S533-MS MOBO 512ram, the people just didn't want to spend money on XP at the time so they installed the win98 from their prior machine.

XP is really touchy about AV's being turned on.. it also has major problems if your system has any spyware, adware active. XP also has (normally) built in - find the original spot for install.. it is located in the boot.ini file.. this file also allow you to change where the normal boot up is located ( which partition). Yes, you should be able to move the HD to another computer.. do not make it the boot drive...you also should be able to boot for DOS Disk (WinME). what is the exact error given when the comp gos into install... & there could be several other programs which are NON COMPATIBLE with XP.which can cause install problems.. which version are you trying to install... XP or XPSP1 or XPSP2

installed the win98 from their prior machine"

Was this a fresh copy of 98, or an OEM copy that came with the computer? If OEM, it may not allow an upgrade to XP.

You can
upgrade to Windows XP Professional from the following
operating systems:

* Windows 98 (all versions)
* Windows Millennium Edition
* Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (Service Pack 6 and later)
* Windows 2000 Professional (including service packs)
* Windows XP Home Edition
Let it be know that If you have a Viris, or trojan infected system it can also KILL THE UPGRADE, but not allowing certain files to be installed
