Hello Chaps,

Have a desktop pc at home that i want to uprgade to a testbed server.

It is surrently running Win98, i am looking to upgrade it to Win2k3, whats the best process for this, do i need to format the drive manualy before installing 2k3? or can i just place the disk in and bobs your job.

It is an evaluaction version of win 2k3 i am using, officialy issued by microsoft at a technet conference, the pc i am using just about makes the minimum spec requirements of the software. just need a little advice.

Cheers, Robo

Robo,

It's not possible to upgrade Win98 to Win2k3.
You have two options here:
-Format and start from scratch
-Install W2k3 with multi-boot and be able to boot in both Operating Systems (make sure you have enough hard disk space and note that you can't access NTFS partitions from Win98).

I don't know if it's possible to undo the installation of an evaluation copy of W2k3 or if you can buy a license and turn it into a permanent one, but take notice that you might have to re-install when the evaluation copy expires.

Thanks for the input palgast, i only need to have this test server up and runngin for a short period of time, the plan once i have finished with the test server is to re-install the origional Win98 OS a nd copy all the files back onto the system,

Cheers, do you have any reccomendations on how to format the HDD? will the install process of Win2k3 allow me to do this or will i have to do it myself from a command promt etc?

During the first stage of the installation, Setup will ask you what to do with your current hard disk/OS.
