Win98 which is fully patched started reporting when surfing the internet, "IEXPLOERE caused invalid page fault in module msvcrt.dll".

Ran System file checker(SFC) and it reports that the following files appear to be corrupt;

mfc30.dll
mfcuia32.dll
mfcans30.dll
mfco30.dll

Should I replace these files from C:\win98 (location of CABs)?

Yes;
you may have virus / trojan / spyware issues

All but mfcans30.dll are legitimate windows files

the system before had a lot of spyware on it. I ran McAfee and Ad-Aware with the latest updates until nothing was found.

How can I verify that mfcans30.dll is invalid? Would it be a problem if I renamed that file and restarted windows?

SORRY!!

Typed the filename wrong...its supposed to be mfcans32.dll and not mfcans30.dll.

I wrote the original e-mail around 2am!!!

very well (I kinda suspected a typo)
so did you replace them all using SFC?
and what's the prognosis

CAB files ar elocated under C:\Win98.

Is there a special cab file I need to point to to restore the file using sfc? Or do I just point it to C:|win98?

What's the correct method?

If all the cabs are in C:\Win98 then just point it there

SFC

Start > Run SFC (System File Checker)
use the "Extract one file from installation disk"
Enter the file name (nwlink.vxd - say)
Click START
the rest is intuitive
(for "Restore from" - navigate to the .cab files whether on CDROM or on HDD)
(for "Save file in" - navigate to the folder where the file belongs)

those all seem like \SYSTEM files, and SFC should default to/ fill in the "Save in" as such.
