Win98 reinstall problems

I reinstalled 98 after many troubles with ME and now that won't work either, don't know if the CD is corrupt or what's going on, telling me the ms-dos version is incompatible with this Windows, but it came off the same CD. I repartitioned the drive and then reformatted it, so it was a perfectly clean disk. It loaded up the first time fine when I didn't have any other cards in besides video, but with the network and sound card, blah!!!!! I can't figure out what the heck is going on, all these components used to work just perfectly together, trying to get back after the ME problems. Any help or ideas would be appreciated, Thanks

Oh, and let us not forget the ever-present,,,,Windows Protection Error on a black screen with not a darn thing else, *sigh*

At a guess either the network card or sound card are faulty since it works ok without them. Try replacing them with others if you can get hold of any and see what happens. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

okay, took out both cards, and got it back up and running,,,then installed sound card, no problem,,,went to install nic and it wouldn't see the cd source for the files needed so I transferred every file from another computer by floppy as it asked, but to no avail, back to the windows protection error,,,,this card is new, only had it for 3 months, hard to believe it's bad already,,, any ideas about why windows is having trouble installing it normally? it went perfectly the first time I installed it. Thanks for both your replies, I was on the same train of thought.

Alright, just the *&^&*&%^(?? now I'm not even getting the windows protection error, just a black screen with a blinking cursor, ctrl+alt+del won't even work, removed everything (again) and nothing, windows starts to load and then poof,,, can get into safe mode, but can't see any problems. HELP!!!!!! lol
