I am working on a Compaq Evo that's running Windows 98. I had sporadic problems with this CD drive. At first, it read the CD fine. Then, after putting in a different CD, it only remembered what was on the first CD. I deleted the temp files and deleted the CD drive from the hardware profile, then rebooted. It still would only show me what was in the first CD I had put in the drive. Then, I removed the CD drive again from the hardware profile and rebooted. But this time, as it was booting up, I had the CD in the drive that I wanted it to read. Then it would read the new CD.
Any ideas about what's causing this issue and how to correct it? Thanks!

Does the computer have a program installed that caches CD data, like 'CD-Quick Cache'or similar?

Might want to check your cdrom cable too... bad floppy drive cables caused the ghosting your having. IDE cables can do it too.
If you only have one hard drive, try installing the cdrom on the secondary bus.

You shouldn't have to remove the actual drive from Device Manager (you said Hardware Profile)..did u mean you "disabled in this hdwre profile"...or do you have different profiles set up on System....

I agree that ski said that there is some kind of caching going on that's causing the unwanted memory of info...
Are you using Data CD or Music CD??..R U Burning CD's?

Desktop or Laptop?

And be careful with moving the drive to Secondary Master which is a good idea, yet you may have an SCSI drive or your other channel(2 IDE, each with a Master/Slave , 4 devices alltogether) may be in use. Your Primary Master is your Main Booted Hard Drive......

See if there's a tick in the box "Enable write behind caching of all removable disk drives" found in
System Properties>Performance Tab>File System>Removable Disk Tab

If you're talking about a "Playlist" that a Media Player uses, such as WMP, RealPlayer, Nero, or Roxio....speak up
