Win98 Hangs intermittently apparently no reason!

I am running an AMD XP1600 on a pcchips M810lmr(built in Sound card) board,256 SDRAM, 64MB Nvidia Graphics card, 40 GB UDMA hard drive and winmodem.
The sytem started to freeze whilst playing Command and Conquer games but now freezes between 11 mins - 2 hours but does not appear to be any pattern, unless I run C&C then it last a few minutes.
* I have tried removing all USB devices in case this was the fault (Hub/Mouse/Scanner/Printer)to no avail.
* updated to the latest drivers for the devices present.
* Fdisked/formatted and reinstalled the operating system with the same results.

I am stumped any ideas?

Cannot comment on irregular freezes when NOT playing C&C but take look at this link for possible help with game..
