Win98 DNS Problem

I have a win98 machine that when started up daily will not hit a site using the host name but will by using the ip address. If i do a release and renew, it then works fine for the rest of the day and then we start the process again the next day. I would like to fix it so that I do not have to perform this step for my user every day.

Any suggestions?

1)How long has this been going on.?
2)Quick fix for the user until this is solved. Had a similar problem that was caused by my isp. Created a batch file and threw a shortcut on the desktop.

Ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /renew

Name it something like IP.BAT and have the user click on the batch file when they start up there machines. This is only a patch but it works.
3)What does ipconfig /all show before you renew?

Glen,

Thanks for the reply. To answer your questions:

1) This has been going on for about 2 weeks on the win98 machine, and started randomly. I also have another user on XP who has been experiencing the same problem for about the same time. Low and behold, this is now happening to me on my XP machine.

2) As for the info before the /renew, i'll have to post that when it happens again which will probably be tomorrow.

You said you experienced this because of a problem with your ISP. How was that determined and how did they resolve it?

Thanks,

Windy

I was having problems getting my cable modem and wireless router to work together. Their tech support couldn't figure it out, so I just created a static mapping using there ip assigned to me which they didn't like. Every so often, they would drop the ip, so I used the batch file. Finally got ahold of the router tech support and they had me clone the mac address of my nic onto the router, this allowed the cable modem straight to my router and used dhcp on all my pc's now. Goog luck.
