hello
in my test setup my w98 client is unable to access the DC's shares
am i missing anything?
i'm logged in as administrator and have created a test share with read permissions for everyone

Might be a silly question, but are you sure the client is connecting to and logging into the domain?

Is it in Active Directory environment? Perhaps all you need to do is to install WINS on that server?

Windows 95 and 98 are not compatible with Active Directory you must upgrade

That is far from true Bobej. You can use Windows 98 no problem in an Active Directory environment.

I'm having the same issue, my 2003 server is a member server though, so no AD on it, but I still can't get the 98 machines to browse the shares. I can ping the server name, are you able to do that? I read something loading a dsclient, which I'm trying tomorrow to see if that works for me.

ensure that you have win98 set up for Windows Sharing .. Client For Window Networks should be installed. File and Print Sharing should be enabled.

Ensure that Logon method is Windows logon... (am I right with this - it's been so long)..

Ensure that the workgroup names are the same...

Try these things...

On Your 2003 server, try setting the LAN Manager Authentication level to NTLM response only:
Default Domain Controller Security Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

thks for all your responses
I have found that if I change the share permission to full control (everyone) instead of "read" then w98 does access it
is that normal?

Yes.. Because Everyone - means Everyone regardless of domain membership or accounts...

You will need to install dsclient if this has not already been done. You can get it from the following site
Windows 95 and 98 will both work in an AD domain but Micrsoft will not support it any more. That is why dsclient is not shipped with Win2003 Server.
