Hi there,

I have just tried to upgrade from Win98 to Win2KPro and it looked like everything went fine until the very last reboot. It now seems to reboot and get to the navy screen for about a second...then it reboots again. It has now been doing that for bout 10mins. I tried changing to safe mode...no luck, and debugging mode...froze at navy screen, and Load last known...no luck. Ive had a look on the forum and I guess the solution is to try to get a set of boot disks?? I really need help please.... thank you all!!!

A clean install would be advised, but at least try one more time. Boot from the Win2k CD and start over.

A lot of times when you get a reboot loop, one of the loading files is corrupt or missing. Try loading your win2k cd and select install on the first screen. When it searchs for current o/s it will pop up with your current 2000 installation. From there, repair the installation and it will replace all the files and act like a "fresh" install. Any information on the machine, user data and such, will still be there.

Oh, and disconnect any unnecessary devices, particulary USB devices. You want a stripped machine during the upgrade.

Post-installation, you can add the devices back one at a time and let the New Hardware Wizard handle them.

I cant load anything from my CD though because it just tries to restart then doeas it all over again. It doesnt actually acknowledge a CD is there. I downloaded the 3 files for the bootdisk and put them on a disk...then put that in and booted. again it didnt even look at the drive and continued to boot win2k...then back to the start again!!???????????????????

Did you ensure your boot sequence in the BIOS is set to boot from CD first? does it even recognize it in the BIOS? Check that first.

Do you have a digital camera?
Take a picture of the (quick) blue screen, as it contains error information that can help use help you.

ok..getting somewhere...got an error message saying that i need to reinstall a file:

<windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

how do i do that?

definitely one of your startup files. Your 2000 cd might not be bootable...especially if it's only an upgrade version. If you have recovery cd's I'd try at least getting 98 back on it, and then try it again from there. That's the only thing I can think of right now. The only way to get that file on would be to copy it over to floppy and booting to it.

If you can select safe mode w/command prompt, you can copy it over from their, but I'm not sure how successful that would be.
