Win2k3 Server/Exchange 2003 OWA?

What does OWA use to encrypt data transversing the internet? Its not L2TP/IPsec or SSH2?

Will s/mime secure everything sent? Does it use SSL?

Will having the Exchange server do all this encryption slow it down? (Right now its all done on my firewall/VPN with onboard hardware for 3DES/AES encryption).
