Win2k Sp 4 hosed automation

I applied service pack 4 to a win2k machine. Now my code that I use to build excel spreadsheets fails with errors like

Code: 
Method 'SheetsInNewWorkbook' of Object '_Application' Failed

Has anyone run into this and found a solution other than uninstalling the service pack? (which I have done for now and everything works fine again)
