Dear all
Our university department has approx 20 win2k pro machines, each with a static IP address (domain: rug.ac.be) assigned by our IT department to access the internet. We would like to install win2k server/MS exchange on one of these machines and hook the other ones as a small network. If I set the server up as a new domain controller, will this cause a conflict with the existing rug.ac.be domain? Can the client PC's keep their static IP address to connect to the server? Any advice would be appreciated - I am not an IT professional myself ;-)

Is your current domain a Windows NT 4 domain or is it Windows 2000?

If it is Windows 2000 then I don't see a problem with installing another domain controller, but if you don't know much about Windows 2000 Server I would recommend leaving it to your local IT department. If this is a server that you would like to set up unofficially then you'll need a domain admin account in order for the server to participate as a domain controller in your existing domain unless your IT department is liberal and lets just anyone set up servers on their domain.

As far as the client machines keeping their static IP addresses - Windows 2000 server will not effect this.

As long as you don't configure any services that conflict with your existing environment such as DHCP, WINS, DNS, etc... then I don't see a problem at all.

HTH!

In fact, it is a Unix based network...
The easiest way would probably be to install win2k server without DHCP/DNS server, but will this allow installing MS Exchange?

Thanks again

Wim

NO AD = NO EXCHANGE 2K
End of story.

Now, you don't have to bring up a domain with the same name as your existing Unix domain. Exchange 2K can be configured to accept mail for multiple SMTP domains...
