Win2k Server and ADSL

I have a windows 2K server and I'm trying to connect a Covad ADSL modem to it but it is not gradding the dynamic IP address from the modem. I tried it on Win 2k Pro and Win XP and they both work fine. Can someone help me.

Try these. Ipconfig /all and see what you get. If it doesn't look right, go ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew. I've got a cable modem and the cable companies software is hokey, so I un-installed it, wrote a batch file and threw it in the startup. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

Did IPconfig /all and got an IP for the internal network and a 169... for the NIC that goes to the ADSL modem. THis card should grab an IP from the modem. Connect my Win2K Pro laptop and it grabbed an IP without a problem. There is also no software needed to initiate the connection. All the settings are loaded on the Zyxel 645 modem.

Don't know what to do next. Any Ideas........

don't you need to have pppoE running on your server. This then creates another virtual network connection and that connections then gets the ip address from your modem.

NIC works fine. Connected it to the internal network and it was able to grab an IP. All settings are saved on the modem by ATT. All I need to do is connect the modem to my NIC and I should have internet access but for some reason Win2K server is not grabbing an IP from the modem. All procedures work fine on all other windows OS with the exception of Win2k Server. Anymore advice?

If the ISP allows two connections, and you are trying to add a third machine you might have problems. Some ISP's when setting up for their service record the MAC addresses of the machines and will then only allocate IP addresses to those particular machines with the MAC addresses that they have on record. You could test that by putting the NIC from one of the other machines into the PC running server and see if you then get an IP address.If so then a workaround would be to use a router, and have the router clone the MAC address of one of the NIC's that is allowed access.

We tried switching the NIC from a working Win2K Pro sysytem. That did not work. The NIC that comes out of the server works fine on the Win2k Pro system. We've even tried a LinkSys 4-Port DSL/Cable Modem Router and that is not grabbing an IP either.

Try making sure that if the server is setup as a DHCP server that you stop that service.
If it is not a DHCP server, go into services and make sure DHCP client service is started. If it is started stop and restart it, then do an ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew
to see if it grabs an IP.

The server is not configured as a DHCP server. I stop and started the DHCP client service, release and renew the IP but still nothing. I also restarted the server, reboot the modem. Still nothing. Anymore Ideas.

IP for the internal network and a 169 169.254.x.x is the default ip windows gives if it's not getting an ip from somewhere else. The fact that you can see each other on the lan is probably because your on the same subnet I'm guessing. Post the results of ipconfig /all and let us see it. Think you need new nic. Are you sure that your provider doesn't have limitations on mac adresses???

I run a year2k server with an alcatel router which spoofes the ip through to the server, and it works fine.

I've heard though that some adsl providers are not happy when you're running a server on your line (depending on your contract offcourse ).

NIC #1 is 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 (Local)
NIC #2 is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx 255.255.0.0 (ADSL)

I installed new NICS same results. I even purchased a Linksys 4-Port DSL/Cable router and it still would not grab an ip from the DSL modem. Is there a way for the service provider to deny connection to a server or router?

Change the local to match the adsl just for jollies and see what happens. Don't know if it matters, but what the hey. Good luck.

Glen,
I have a Linksys 4-Port DSL/Cable/AP (attach point for wireless LAN) router (about a year old and I have not updated the firmware in it yet).

It is working with 2 W2K Advanced servers, W2K Pro, and XPHome via wireless Linksys for my desk top.

I have Earthlink as an ISP.

As I had been testing WinProxy thru the W2K Pro (which also worked for the servers DSL and dial-up), I had to change the Internet connection of the browser to not use a proxy.

Sidenote: I was able to use WinProxy from a server to the W2KPro to the Linksys with the other machines going straight to the Linksys (I wanted to test being able to control the date/time the one machine was allowed to connect- this also worked).

Bottom link- W2K Advanced server with the Linksys 4-Port DSL/Cable/AP does work, so don't give up.
