As with NT I search from the start button | search | find files or folders, however, in NT, i am used to doing a search where either:

a) what i type in is EXACTLY what i'm looking for and dont display any other results, or
b) i could optionally use a wildcard to get files that are similar

For example, in NT... a search for abc.gif... would either turn up abc.gif or nothing at all... and a search for *abc.gif might turn up abc.gif and xyzabc.gif

However, I found that in Win2k, a search for abc.gif... assumes a wildcard by default, so instead of just giving me abc.gif when i search for abc.gif... it might give me two hundred other files that contain abc.gif

Is there a registry or other setting somewhere to change this default search to normal. (only use wildcard if i tell it to)

Thx in advance!

I don't know that there is a registry setting you can change, but if you put it in quotes, i believe it will only search on what is typed. So if you put in "abc.gif" it wouldn't find the xyzabc.gif.

Thx for fast reply. Your suggestion does, indeed work and will provide a useable solution for me.

I am still interested if anyone has any ideas on how to force this action via registry or other modification.

Thx again and have a great day.
