When I look in license management on my Win2k server it shows one CAL in use for each user signed on whether win2k pro or win98 but it also shows one CAL in use for each win2k pro computer. Do I really have to buy a CAL for each user and for each win2k pro computer or am I doing something wrong?

According to my Sybex Win2000 Server book, all computers which hook up to a 2000 Server require a license in addition to the Server having it's own license. And you have to also license the connections Per Server or Per Seat. Per Seat means that a user can connect up to as many servers as necessary with one license. Per Server means you have to have a license for every connection to every server you want to connect to. (IE, got 10 users hooking up to Terminal Services and Exchange and a DC, need 30 licenses).

It sounds what you've got is about right. Microsoft likes to milk their stuff for anything they can get. However, I do recommend trotting over to their website and taking a look at their licensing stuff. There is a LOT to it, it's complicated and it's changing as of July 31st, which could complicate life. Check out which is their licensing home page.

Hope that helps!!!
