Hello,

I want to setup a small network for a small business, how do i go on about licenses? I want something like 20 clients with windows 2000 professional installed and i want a small server running windows 2000 server??. Do i have to buy so many licenses for each client machine, also when putting windows 2000 server for the server, do i have to set the licensing as per seat??

Please help..

Thanks..

If the W2K workstations will be accessing files on the W2K Server, then you'll need to have Client Access Licenses (CAL's). If all twenty workstations will be accessing the server at the same time, then you'll need 20 CAL's, either per server or per seat. In per seat, the workstation is licensed to access any file server. In per server, the server is licensed to accept the total number of CAL's purchased connections. So, if only ten of your twenty workstations will access the file server at any one time, then in theory you'll only need 10 CAL's per server. If they'll all be accessing the server at the same time, it's much easier to just buy twenty CAL's and license per seat (that way you don't have to worry about licenses, if you add a new workstation, buy another CAL).

As for per seat or per server, that's your choice (based on above). If you choose per server at first, then you can switch (just once) to per seat at a later date.
