I think the problem might be with the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator. I foolishly uninstalled it the other day (since it was having problems), thinking that I could reinstall it easily. I have yet to find anywhere that would let me do that.
My ISA Sound Blaster 16 (1994) worked fine until a few days ago. Without any warning, it stopped working. Windows 2000 still recognizes that the card is there in the Device Manager (Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM)). If I uninstall the card, shut down, and reboot, Windows can find and reinstall the card with no problems.
Except that it doesn't work.
If I look at the Properties of the card, it claims that it is functioning properly. Here's the weird thing: Under the Properties tab, Audio Devices, Sound Blaster 16: Properties, it tells me that the "Driver is enabled but has not been started" (It says the same for MIDI and Mixer Devices).
Under the Sounds and Multimedia section of the Control Panel, Audio tab, it tells me that there are no Playback/Recording/MIDI Devices.
I've tried another card (another SB16, nearly identical), and gotten exactly the same results.
I've pulled out every other card in my machine (excepting the video, of course) to tried and find some hidden conflict, but with no success.
I've even left my computer off for a couple of minutes, to allow whatever mysterious charge that might remain in the card to dissipate.
In addition to all this, I just realized that my modem stopped working too. It detects fine, and I can even query it from the Diagnostics tab. But when I try to dial into my ISP, it gives me error 797: The connection failed because the modem was not found.
At this point, I'm convinced that it's not actually a hardware problem. I think that somehow Windows has decided to remove my SB16 from the list of potential multimedia devices available to map through. Is there any way to force it to use my soundcard? Is there some way I can start the driver? Do I need to reinstall Windows? Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before? What does WDM stand for, anyway? Could this be some kind of virus?
Both my modem and my soundcard are ISA.
