I have recently re-installed win2k server on our server. Everything seems to be working fine on the server, however all of the other pc's have suddenly lost their internet connection. I am (fairly) certain that i have everything set up the same way as before the reinstall. Any ides as to what the problem could be?

To be honest i have very little experience setting up win 2k server so it may well be that i have something configured wrong :)

thanks in advance

Pete

We will need more information about your current infrastructure...

Workgroup or Domain?

How are your clients set up to access the Internet?
ICS?
NAT?

Firewall?

unfortunately i'm out of the office atm, but from memory:

the firewall we use is BlackIce server edition, i'm 100% sure that the firewall is not stopping the pc's from connecting.

as we only have 5 pc's in that office the pc's all have static ip's 192.168.0.x - the server has 192.168.0.1 ofc ;)

the pc's are all on a workgroup called NONE, dont ask me why, i didnt set them up!

I suspect it may be something to do with this: the server needs to have iis enabled and i had to start active directory to create users for it. Along the way i've ended up with a domain which i dont particually need called gss.local

i think they are using NAT (i'll have to check when i get back to the office this evening)

Thanks for the quick response Patty!

With only 5 PC's in a small workgroup and the IP addressing scheme (192.168.0.x) you are using I would be more inclined to say you were using ICS on the old server and have not enabled it on the new server.

To check if ICS is enabled right-click My Network Places and choose Properties. Next right-click your network connection and choose Properties, then click the Sharing tab.

Just a thought,

thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it as soon as i get back!

I'll let you know if that solves it,

thanks again

Pete

ICS is enabled for the net connection so i'm afraid that wasnt it :(

The server can see all of the other machines on the network. The server is not part of their workgroup, the server is part of a domain for which it is the controller. Could the fact that the server is on a domain be causing this?

thanks in advance,

Pete

Just noticed this error in the system log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ipnathlp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 31002
Date: 08/09/2003
Time: 18:27:12
User: N/A
Description:
The DNS proxy agent was unable to bind to the IP address 192.168.0.1. This error may indicate a problem with TCP/IP networking. The data is the error code.
Data:
0000: 1d 27 00 00 .'..

seems to have happened every time the server loads up. Its confusing me slightly as i'm using the address 192.168.0.1 to remotely connect to the server. Any body got any ideas???

Pete

Just in case anybody's interested it turns out that it was Symantec Corp antiv 8.1 which was causing this problem. This has now left my server without any antivirus protection unfortunately, but hey, at least the damn thing works now!! ;)
