I have a Windows 2000 Pro system at a remote site. My customer is trying to connect it to a network and in turn write information from our program to a directory on a Linux server. Through Win Explorer, the server machine can be seen, and sometimes can be written to. However, the connection can be working fine at one time and then later it acts as if the server directory can't be seen. They have checked all cables, hubs, etc. and say they are fine. They have also stated that they have Win9X and NT machines that are talking fine to this server.

It doesn't appear to be a network privelages problem, as sometimes the system is fine. Is there some type of setting (eg; connection timeout) that could be causing this problem? I do not currently know what version/type of Linux they are using on their server. I don't really even know if this is a Win2K, networking, or Linux question! Any help with this nagging problem is appreciated.

Thanks

I have received additional information on this problem from my end user. When trying to copy to the network drive (linux server) the following error comes up:

Windows delayed write failed. Windows was unable to save data files....

The remote unit seems to connect for a short period, and then gets this error. A similar problem is happening on his NT4 Workstation machines. On NT the error is:

System Process Lost Delayed Write Data...

On NT, I was able to get around the error by disabling "Redirector Caching" (info to do this came from MSKB), but this caused network access time to slow drastically.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You actually need to post this in the unix forum I think. If it's happening to multiple NT machines, then I believe the problem is with the Samba settings on the linux box. Who maintains that computer? They should look into the smb.conf settings file and see where the timeouts are set, and etc. Samba is what *nix uses to share with windows machines, and it can be tricky to set up as there are pages and pages of configuration options. ________
Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

You need to install the Windows 2000 services for Unix. CJ

Thanks for your replies, I will get with the Linux/Unix server admin and try both of these options. I will post back on how this goes, though it may be several days as both myself and the server admin are outside contractors for the company using the equipment (in fact we've never even met).

I now realize this is probably more a Unix question, but when I first posted, I thought I had a Win2K problem. I decided to just use the original thread as I got more info so I didn't have fragments of this problem all over the place.

Thanks again for your help.
