We have a Win2003 network with 10.100.0.1 and subnet 255.255.0.0 for our main server. We are opening another office soon in another city. The guy who is going to set up the router in the new office wants to know what ip address to give it.
I want to give it 10.100.200.1 with a subnet of 255.255.0.0.
Will this work? Do I need a different submask? Any better suggestions or helpful hints or clues why this is good or bad?
Thanks.

With a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 anything that starts 10.100 is considered to be on the same network. Most people I know would consider this kind of network BAD because of the potential for serious issues with broadcasts (especially if you have a lot of clients). Instead, the recommendation would be to use VLANs and routers to create separate networks and in turn use a Class C mask - 255.255.255.0

If you use 10.100.200.x as the IP of the router in the new office, it's going to be logically on the same network - if you want it on it's own subnet, then either change your network entirely and start subnetting correctly - or use a number other than 100 - for example, 10.101.x.y or 10.99.x.y (basically, anything other than 10.100)

1)So if I understand, if I use 10.101.0.1 , and 255.255.0.0 for the router - then use 10.101.x.y for the pc's, server, etc. - that should work....right?

2) The pcs on this subnet should be able to get to a main Win2003 server on the main network. I would have to do a little configuring with DNS I suppose to get that to work...right?
