I heard that if you've a Windows NT network (all Servers are NT, clients are mix of NT, 2000, etc.) that placing a Windows 2000 Server on the network somehow "takes over" control of the network - is this right? How does it affect existing PDCs and BDCs?

Not so. A W2K server can join an NT domain as a member server only. No effect on a PDC/BDC.

Brontosaurus,
Thanks mate - that's brilliant - so just to confirm: if I take a brand new Win2K server and connect it to my network of NT servers - there's no risk of power-struggle or PDC/BDC intervention, etc?

A W2k "server" will act like any other server on the network. It's only when it is promoted to a Domain Controller that it will "take over". When a W2k box is promoted it will become an Active Directory DC. Since NT 4.0 doesn't know anything about AD the first W2k DC will take over the PDC role and all of the NT 4.0 BDC will look to it for all replication.

That's magic - thank you for taking the time to clear that up for me - a HUGE help :-)
