I am trying to use windows2000 professional backup
My cd-rw is recognized in device manager and reports
to be working properly, but ms backup keeps asking
for disc to be inserted

The Windows 2000 built in backup application cannot write directly to CD-R or CD-RW disks (although it may work with packet writing software such as Nero InCD or Roxio DirectCD). Instead, you have to backup to a file locally or on a network drive, then use your CD burning software to write this to the CD.

MS backup can only write to tape drives and network shares out of the box.
