I introduced a 2003 swing server into my environment a few days ago and let everything replicate to it. Last night when I was transferring roles to the new 2003 server one of the old domain controllers seized control of DC and would not relenquish it! I have tried to sieze rolls with the new 2003 server that was supposed to be the DC and it gives me an error that the current FSMO holder cannot be contacted. We even tried shutting down the server that went crazy and having users log into the new server and it wont even recognize it. Any advice?

Run DCDIAG and NETDIAG at the new and "crazy" servers and correct any problems there as a starting point.

Make sure that all of your DNS is set up and working properly. Check the event logs for replication issues.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark

here are my netdiag results...looks like we have some problems...since our main dns server bit the dust i had to give the "crazy" server another ip which is the old dns server and listen on the old dns server port to accept connections (because dns is static on some computers)

I tried running these diag tools on my 2003 box and they dont exist...is it on a resource kit or something?

I also had to dcpromo /forceremoval my swing server is there anyway to tell the DC that it is gone? it refuses to delete it?

For your DNS woes, I would start with removing any entries you see for the old machine. Then have your current DNS server re-register. From a command prompt run:

IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS
IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS
NET STOP NETLOGON
NET START NETLOGON

To run the DCDIAG and NETDIAG, install the Support Tools found on the Installation CD.

You can forcefully remove the entries for the swing server by following my FAQ in the Win2K forum. It all applies to Win2K3 as well.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark
