I am trying to change motherboards in a computer with win2000 pro installed. It always seems to require a completely new install. No change of hardware except the motherboard. Is this to be expected and is there a way around the problem? Thank you.

Are you switching from an Intel board to a VIA chipset or visa versa? If you switch to a new board that has an Intel chipset from an old board with an Intel chipset, then boot into safe mode and go to device manager and delete all the system resources. then reboot. If the chipsets are both Intel but drastically different then this may not work. If you are switching from VIA to Intel or Intel to VIA, then you may have to reinstall 2000. If you try to boot into with out reinstalling you may get an impassable blue screen (even in safe mode). I have done this on several occasions. Your best bet is BEFORE you shutdown for the final time to replace the board, boot into safe mode and delete all system resources and then shutdown and replace the board.

This method has worked for me.

Hope this helps

It is always better for your system if you reinstall your OS when changes your motherboard. This way you are ensured that no old drivers stay behind which can interfear with your new board. With a new install you are insured of a more stabil and faster OS -> PC

The biggest problem when changing MoBo's with different chipset's is the fact that you are using different IDE conroller's. You do not have to re-install windows. There is a utility that Microsoft has released called sysprep. This will allow W2K to prep the OS for the change in chipsets. It will also allow for the re-enumeration of all Pnp devices in your system. This utility works great for creating master images of your OS. Make sure you get the latest version of sysprep.
