I have a WinXP machine that has been acting funny. It will freeze up during start up, when a screen saver is on, and in some programs. It's very sporatic. Many times, the computer will not turn on. The lights are on, but nothing shows up. I'll shut it down, turn the monitor off, turn the computer back on then turn the monitor back on and it's okay. Any clue?

thanks

The first culprits, in my opinion, would be the power supply and virus\trojan\malware of some sort.

If you have or can get another power supply easily, then try swapping out your power supply. You can test a power supplies rails (voltage lines) using a digital or analog multimeter, a good tutorial can be found using google or go to techrepublic, they have a great one there. You have to sign up for free, but its a great site anyway.

Do you have progs like an antivirus\adaware\spybot\stinger\ etc etc, running and up to date on your computer? Virus, and especially trojans can do all kinds of things to your computer and just because your antivirus prog says all is well means nothing but a good start. You need other programs to ferret out all the trojans and other malware.

You could try re-setting the bios, wont hurt any. Make sure you do it by the mobo mfgrs manual as it varies, but usually you remove all power sources from the mobo, take out the battery, move the jumper that is near the battery from pin 1 and 2 to pins 2 and 3, and leave it like that for a few minutes, then move jumper back and put battery back in. Battery should test at 3 volts.

Another thing you can do is to remove all extra items, usb, pci, etc, that you dont need to boot up and see if the system is ok like that.

To me, it sounds more like a power supply issue. However, its still too soon to really say, we need a lot more info on your computer and its parts, we need this basic info.

One more thing, go to my computer\properties\advanced\startup and recovery-settings.
Is there is a checkmark on automatically restart? Im only asking at this point, trying to figure out the problem.
