Hi guys and gals,

I thought I would add this little tip I found on the 'net about XP Pro (may work with home?)

An offsite staff member running XP Pro on his desktop PC (p4 1.7, 512 mb ram etc etc) was having all sorts of speed related problems - locking up when opening files, printing took ages, Autocad drawings were slow to open (5+ minutes!)... all local, no networked / WAN drives etc. It all came down to the pre SP2 XP Pro hotfix 811493 - uninstalled it - all fine!!

Hope this helps out anyone out there - worked for me!

PS. I told him NOT to install hotfixes anymore UNLESS it fixes a problem that he has!

The problems with that hotfix have been discussed here previously, but it is worth mentioning again. Including:

"Microsoft Corp. has pulled a security patch for Windows XP systems with Service Pack 1 installed after customer complaints that installing the patch slowed their systems to a crawl. Microsoft is working on a revised patch for Windows XP Service Pack 1 and will re-issue that patch when it has been completed and fully tested, the software maker said in a revised version of its security bulletin MS03-013 < posted late yesterday. Source: ComputerWorld (April 24, 2003)

Microsoft said it will also publish a knowledge base article that describes what environmental factors produce slowdowns when combined with the XP patch and what can be done to reduce the impact of the slowdowns should they occur.
That article should be available within the next few days.
They declined to estimate when an updated patch that resolves the performance issues will be available, however.
